After twenty years of leading the Barberton HS Wrestling Program, Dave Mariola will step down as the coach of the Magics. Coach Mariola met with his team and coaches on Thursday to let them know of his decision. When Dave Mariola arrived at BHS, he had seven wrestlers in the high school program and leaves the program with over thirty HS wrestlers, a strong Middle School Team and an organized and competitive Youth Program.
He has taken the HS program to levels it had never seen before and leaves the program in great shape moving forward. This past season he had two state qualifiers and one alternate in the OHSAA State Championships with Gary Wokojance placing 3rd at 182 lbs. and PJ Zentiska placing 5th at 220 lbs. Zachary Scalf was the alternate (145 lbs.) and the team had a 12 – 3 dual meet record.
Coach Mariola has an overall record of 302-129-2 which includes his record at Nordonia HS (48-16-2). His record at Barberton HS was 254-113-0. Dave was recently inducted in the Summit County Sports HOF (Class of 2018) and received the Clem Caraboolad Award in the Spring of 2018.
Coach Mariola graduated from St. Peter Chanel HS and Michigan State University. He was a very successful wrestler at the HS and Collegiate level.
Dave and his wife, Beth, live in Stow with their daughter, Keegan and son, Caden. Beth is an administrator in the Twinsburg school district. Dave will continue to teach Health and Physical Education at Barberton HS.
The Barberton City Schools, Athletic Department and Magics Wrestling Community greatly appreciate Coach Mariola for all that he has done for our student-athletes in the classroom and on the mat. He cared for them in every aspect and helped them in so many different areas of their lives.
We wish him and his family the best.
