Girls Varsity Basketball · Greg Whitmer Steps Down as Coach of the Lady Magics

Coach Greg Whitmer informed the Barberton City School District on Monday, June 24, 2019 that he has decided to resign as the Head Coach of the Lady Magics Basketball Program.   “The past six years have been the best and most memorable years of my life.  I feel that I have grown so much as a coach and a person, along with being able to lead our Girls’ Basketball Family.”

“I have decided that it is in my best interest to resign my basketball coaching position at this time.  As life progresses and circumstances change, I feel it is necessary to refocus much of my energy in different avenues of life.  It has been an honor to represent both the school district and the city of Barberton.  I can’t say enough about how much support from fans, parents and administrators has meant to me and our program.”

Coach Whitmer was hired in 2013 by Athletic Director Rob Culbertson and he has guided the team the last six seasons.  This past season saw the first ever HOME tournament game win over Akron North in the first round of the OHSAA Sectionals.  He also continued the growth of the youth program and added a Disney Trip to the regular season schedule.  This upcoming season will be the third trip that the team has taken over the Winter Break.

“The BHS Girls’ Basketball Program has been in good hands the last six seasons from the high school program all the way to the youth because of Coach Whitmer’s hard work and dedication” said current AD John Sabol.  “We wish him and his family the best in the future.”

The Barberton City Schools and BHS Athletic Department would like to thank Coach Greg Whitmer for his commitment to the Girls’ Basketball Program and our student-athletes.
